One more correction

Wed 01Aug2012 12:31PM

One more correction - the answer to #5 on the 2011 Practice Exam is c. (D is not physically possible as all real images are inverted)

Again, apologies for any confusion.  All the questions should be fixed now.

Corrections to study material

Wed 01Aug2012 11:46AM

The following e-mail was sent to all members of the class:

After reviewing some of the study material posted.  The following errors were found:

1) From the 2011 Practice Exam the correct answer to #8 is A.  (The text file will be corrected shortly.  I accidentally worked the problem using the wrong units in a hurry)

2) The correct answer to Quiz 7 question 3 is YES.  (Again in a hurry I switched the indexes of refraction when working the problem to post answers.)

Apologies if this affected your studying.  Both should be corrected online now.

Please bring an ID to the exam

Tue 31Jul2012 8:28AM

Please bring your Purdue ID with you to the exam on Thursday.  We will be checking ID's as exams are turned in.

Quizzes and Practice Exam Answers Posted

The quizzes (along with answer keys) for the 2nd half of the semester have been posted to study from.  Also answer keys for the Practice Exams previously posted are also now available in the Practice Exam section.  The answers for Practice Exam from 2011 are in a text file.  There are two problems (#8 and #17) where none of the listed answers are correct.  However the text file has the correct numeric answers.

Exam 2: Date, Time, Location and Format

Mon 16Jul2012 5:15PM

Exam 2 will be during the scheduled final exam for this course.

Thursday Aug. 2, 3:20 - 5:20 PM

Location: EE 170

The exam will be between 15 and 20 questions.

All but one question will be multiple choice.

The other question will be to draw a ray diagram and give the properties of the resulting image.

This is a slight deviation from what was stated in the syllabus, so please voice any objections or concerns prior to the final.

Scattering Dropped

Mon 16Jul2012 4:19PM

Slides on Scattering from the wave optics chapter may be ignored as there will not be time to cover it in lecture.

However, the book does provide a good explanation of the sky is blue if you are interested.  (Section 25.9)

Updated Equation sheet

Mon 16Jul2012 4:06PM

The equation sheet has been updated to include magnification equations for microscopes and telescopes, which was not previously included.  The present form of the equation sheet should be as it will appear on the final.

The equation sheet does not count as your one sheet of notes.  You will still be allowed to bring in a sheet of notes (8 x 11, front and back) to use on the exam

Dropped Content

Wed 11Jul2012 12:39PM

Due to time contraints, the section on cameras from Chapter 26 is going to be dropped from the lecture.  Questions regarding cameras will be removed from homework.

Study Materials Posted

Mon 09Jul2012 4:31PM

The equation sheet used for last year's final exam has been posted under the Equation sheet section.  This year's equation sheet should be the same.  It can be useful to familiarize yourself with the equation sheet by using it to work homework problems.

Two practice finals (written by the instructor for the 2011 course) have also been posted under Practice finals and can be used as study tools for this year's final.

The Practice exams under important links are from many years ago.  They contain similar questions but were written for a different textbook and fall semester courses that had 3 exams.
