Final Exam

Tue 24Apr2012 2:57PM

PHYS 411 Final Exam will be given on Wednesday, May 2, 7 - 9 pm in Rm.331 (our regular classroom). No crib sheets or calculator as usual. It will have 4 problems, of which 2 will be from materials of Chap.13 and Chap.14 (and related discussions in class and homework), 1 from the materials covered by Exam II (i.e., from Chaps. 12 and 4 and related discussions and homework), and 1 from the materials covered by Exam I (i.e., Chaps. 10, 11, and the "tide" part of 5, as well as related discussions and homework).

All graded homework not yet picked up as well as Homework #10 (that just got graded) are in Rm.144 for you to pick up. The two of you who didn't come to class and thus have not picked up Exam II should also pick them up now.

As I stated, Wednesday class (April 25) is optional. I will be there and will discuss any of our previous Exams or Homework sets, but you are not required to attend.  You may turn in your Homework #11 at that time, or to my mailbox in Rm.144, or directly to me prior to 5 pm on that day.

Good luck.

Exam II will be given on Monday, April 9, 6:30 - 8:30 pm in Rm.331 (our regular classroom). 4 Problems, one of which is similar (at least in topic/concept) to (some of) the problems in Exam I, while the other three will be from topics in Chapter 12 and Chapter 4. No notes, crib sheets, or calculators will be allowed or needed.

First Exam date/time fixed

Mon 13Feb2012 3:47PM

Our first exam will be an evening exam, on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 6:30 - 8:30 pm in Rm.333 (next door to our regular lecture room). It will be based on materials from Chapters 10 and 11 of Marion and Thornton and corresponding class materials (homework, lectures), including discussions of the tides. More details will be given soon - but no crib sheet will be allowed. Any excessively complicated or very hard-to-derive equations will be provided in the exam itself.

First Exam

Mon 06Feb2012 10:00AM

When we are done with Chapter 11 (Rigid bodies), I would like to give the first evening exam. That should occur sometime in the week of Feb. 13 or that of Feb. 20. Please start thinking about which evenings you have available - start making a list of committments you already have. I will be polling you through this week.

Homework 4

Fri 03Feb2012 12:55PM

For Problem 2, consider that the center of the rod is supported by a friction-free, universal joint - that is, ignore gravity.
