Final Exam papers
Mon 11May2009 6:45PMPlease note that printed final exams will be discarded in 2 weeks after the final. They are kept in PHYS 144 and if you have any questions thatr may require your printed copy these should be addressed within these two weeks.
Please do not ask us to find your exam in the pile of 1400 exams and check it for you - we simply do not have manpower to check every single exam. If you indeed need to do that you will have to come to PHYS 144 office yourself or ask a trusted friend to dig it out from that pile.
Bonus points for surveys
Fri 08May2009 9:48AMBonus points for surveys are added to your homewrok score and normalized to the maximum possible points for homework, i.e. if you have perfect score in HW section your normalized score with bonus points will be >100%.
The grade cut-offs, if needed, will be adjusted without accounting for the bonus points, and thus bonus points will affect only students who are close to cut-off and only in a positive way.

Average scores for exams
Tue 24Mar2009 12:08PMWhile the grade cutoffs are set in syllabus and grading is not on a curve, many students were interested in how they do in respect to the rest of the class.
Here are average scores for exams along with standard deviations (SD):
Component Total(pts) Average(pts) SD(pts)
Exam 1-M 100 78 14
Exam 2-M 70 47 11
Exam 2-H 30 21 6
Exam 2 - missing scores and disputed multiple choice scores
Thu 12Mar2009 1:48PM1. Some of the hand-written problems are still in the process of being graded, these are the exams with unmarked or mismarked recitation sections. It takes longer time for these to find appropriate TA to grade it.
2. If you dispute your multiple choice part score and believe that there was error in transferring data from scantron sheet to CHIP - please act immediately. The exams will be destroyed in one week from now and nothing could be changed after that. The first step in dispute is to go to poom PHYS 144 and ask for your opscan sheet and maybe actual paper exam.
exam 2 grading note
Tue 10Mar2009 10:35PMA few students noticed a grade change for their multiple choise part of the Exam 2. One of the answers has been marked incorrectly in the grading system, the mistake has been corrected late Monday. For the problem on spring mass in Exam02 the right answer is "As the mass is increased the time period of motion increases", the exams have been regraded and scores corrected.
EXAM II ON March 5th
Tue 03Mar2009 11:22AM
Problems: ~14 multiple choice questions (70 points)
+ write-up part (30 points)
CHIP passwords
Mon 09Feb2009 11:52AMWe are getting hundreds of emails like "I am an idiot, I set my massword to something really complicated and forgot it".
PLEASE set your password to something you CAN remember, perhaps to be the same as your webassign password, or do not change it!
CHIP scores
Mon 09Feb2009 11:49AMIf you have question about particular scores posted (or not posted) on CHIP, please ask the following persons:
iClicker scores: your lecture instructor, include your iClicker number in email
Lab scores: ask your Lab TA
Recitation scores: ask Recitation TA
Exam 1 scores: sergei@physics.purdue.edu
Webassign: total score shown incorrectly
Tue 03Feb2009 3:00PMIn some cases the total score shown on top of the assignment page is lower than what your actual score is when you sum up your individual problem scores manually. This is a problem WebAssign is aware of and tries to fix. However, this glitch will not affect your scores when they will be transferred to CHIP, the scores in CHIP will be correct.
Exam I scores and results
Thu 29Jan2009 2:44PM1. The scores for the first exam have been posted on CHIP in "Evening Exams Totals", "Exam 1" slot, and also in "Exam 1 components" under "Exa1Ma" slot (Machine graded, multiple choice). The average for this exam was 77 points out of 100 (5 points for each of the 20 problems).
2. To view your exam version # along with your answer sequence please look into "Exam 1 components", slot "AnswersEx1". Your exam numer is the first two-digit number followd by all 20 answers, for example:
Exam05-12345123451234512345
05 - exam number, your answer for the first question checked on your scantron form is "A" (1=A), second question is "B" (2=B), third question is "C" (3=C) etc.
3. The exam itself can be downloaded from the course web page under "Exams", which has all 12 versions of the exam posted in PDF format along with the answer key table.
4. If you have concerns that your scantron sheet was processed incorrectly, or you believe that you marked wrong exam # on your scantron form - you should go to room Phys144 and search for your scantron sheet and exam print out. Once found - leave them with the staff there and arrange a meeting with your instructor to deal with possible obvious errors. Note: if you have marked different answers on scantron and exam printout the scantron form will be given a preference by default.

EXAM I: problems with practice exam problems
Mon 26Jan2009 7:24PMUnfortunately we have discovered several very annoying "typos" in the practice exams posted on the web site (specifically problems 13 (missing "-" sign in front of 9.9), problem 14 (apparently 6.4 instead of 7.7 in the answer) and problem 15 similar error, in addition problem 18 must have 1.25's instead of .25s in answer A. Once verified, we will post the corrected practice exam with answers on Tuesday before noon.
In future, if you discover obvious error, please check course announcements if the problem is fixed, or otherwise report error to your instructor.
Q: What if there is error/misprint discovered during real exam? A: We will announce it and will make every attempt to fix it during the exam. If this turnes out to be impossible you will receive full credit for this problem.
