Current Research-
Environmental Noise Characterization
Research at the nanoscale presents a variety
of challenges not the least of which is to control the environmental
conditions that invariably influence experiments at the nanoscale.
Anyone who has designed and built an instrument to work with
nanometer-scale precision understands the challenges involved.
For years we have used intuition and hard work to overcome the
limitations of the lab space we have been given. We are still
fighting, but we have also begun a systematic effort to measure
and understand at a fundamental level what issues confront the
nanoscale researcher. We are trying to develop a suite of versatile
techniques to characterize the environmental variables that
plague most common laboratory rooms.
