Demos: 6C-10 Damped Oscillations

The output of a square-wave generator is connected to a series RL circuit. The leading and trailing edges of the square wave make the RL circuit “ring.” A characteristic damped oscillation trace is seen on the attached oscilloscope.

Directions: Set the square wave frequency to approximately 100 Hz. A DPDT switch allows either the R or L to be connected to the scope.

Suggestions for Presentation: No particular suggestions other than discussing the concept of damped oscillations prior to the demonstration.
