Demos: 5A-25 Capacitance, Potential & Charge

Three conducting spheres (radii 0.5 in, 0.75 in and 1.0 in) with insulating handles are charged simultaneously. The speres are tested for charge one by one by placing them in contact with an electroscope. The largest sphere will produce the largest deflection.

Directions: This demonstration must be done quickly because of charge leakage. Touch the three spheres to the hand-driven Van de Graff generator simultaneously and turn the crank one time. If possible, have three electroscopes side by side and touch each with one of the spheres as close to the same times as possible. Repeat, if necessary, to establish what is happening.

Suggestions for Presentation: Ask the students how size of conductor affects the capacitance.
