Demos: 3B-06 Thermal Conductivity Bars

This device is composed of four different conductors where each bar is attached to a sensitive liquid crystal thermometer. When the device is heated, it will show the different rates of conductivity for four different metals: steel; brass; aluminum; copper. To start the demonstration, boil a beaker of water. Once boiling, turn off the hotplate and immerse only the conducting bars into the water. Be careful to not let the rest of the device come in contact with the water. You will see the temperature of the bars change almost immediately. Timing the temperature change on each bar will give you a reliable estimate of each bar’s relative conductivity. The actual conductivity values are noted on the back of the device.
