Demos: 3B-05 Ice Melting Blocks

This is a demonstration of thermal conductivity and heat capacity. Start the demonstration by asking for volunteers to feel the two blocks and make a prediction about which block will melt ice faster. Then, place an ice cube of similar size on each block and watch. Within a short amount of time, one cube will melt noticeably faster. The reason for the different melting rates is one block is aluminum and the other is plastic. The aluminum has a much greater ability to transfer heat as compared to the plastic.
