Demos: 2C-11 Streamlines

A colored liquid is passed through a chamber in such a way as to make visible streamline flow around an obstacle.

Directions: This set-up needs to be done by the lecture-demo staff. You need only open the clamp on the hose to start the flow. The video camera makes it visible to the entire class.

Suggestions for Presentation: You should point out that streamlines are artifacts, just like any field lines. The streams of purple liquid follow the direction of flow and approximate the field lines, just as iron filings approximate magnetic field lines. Point out especially how the streamlines do not cross each other.

Applications: Turbulent vs non-turbulent flow
