Demos: 1Q-09 Small Gyroscopes

The gyroscope provides an interesting and fascinating demonstration of the Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum. There are several small gyroscopes, with single or two degrees of freedom and battery powered or pull string powered. There are extensions, ball ends or slot ends than can be secured to the gimbal. You can demonstrate stability by standing the spinning gyroscope on end or placing it on a string using the slotted attachment. You can demonstrate precession by setting the gyroscope on the small stand or by adding an extension and standing it on the aluminum plate. You can also demonstrate precession by suspending the spinning gyroscope with a loop of string. We can use the video camera to project the gyroscope on the viewing screens in the lecture hall for all to see.
