Demos: 1D-07 Paper Saw

A thin paper circle is bolted to the axle of a high speed motor. When rotating at full speed, the edge of the paper can cut soft wood! The radial forces holding the paper together make the paper rigid.

Directions: The equipment is straightforward and will likely be set up ready to go. Make sure that all connections are tight and KEEP FINGERS AWAY FROM THE SPINNING PAPER!

Suggestions for Presentation: Students know that they can get paper cuts, but will likely not believe that a paper disk can cut wood.

Applications: None
