COMMENT ON GRADING CHANGE

Fri 08May2009 3:37PM

We have been informed that there were inappropriate actions during the in-class clicker quizzes.  Students were passing down answers between classes and others were having scores registered even though they were not in class.  To minimize any distortion that this introduced the following changes were made, after discussions in the Physics Department, in scoring for the course.   The number of points allotted to Clicker quizzes was reduced from 100 to 50 points.  The points total was reduced from 1000 to 950.  There was also a lowering of points needed for each letter grade category.

 Unfair clicker quiz practices

Wed 11Mar2009 1:41PM

I have received complaints from some 221 students that some other students are using practices in the clicker quizzes that are unfair to them.   The two practices are:
1) getting correct answers from the 8:30 class and using them  in the 9:30 class
2) students using several clickers so that others not even taking the exam are getting  full credit.

To reduce the unfair advantage 1) I will scramble questions and in the future use different questions in each class.  To reduce unfair advantage 2) there is now a clear policy of ONE AND ONLY ONE CLICKER PER STUDENT.  A staff member will be present at lecture and enforce this rule.
