PRIME LAB Ventilation System

PRIME Lab is equipped with a specialized ventilation system.   Since PRIME Lab is located totally underground with no windows, an additional means of ventilation is needed.   Normally, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system will provide an adequate exchange of air in the building.   The system can be switched to emergency purge mode which will substantially increase the building air exchange rate.   Switches to activate the system are located at each of the exits to the basement level and near the center stairway of PRIME Lab.   The locations are shown on the PRIME Lab safety map that is located near the center stairway on each floor. This system is frequently used to remove unpleasant odors such as occur from painting.   If the system is used for removing a toxic gas, the manual fire alarm should also be activated to initiate evacuation of the building.   In this case, the fire department must be notified that they are responding to a hazardous materials situation.
