Waste Containers

Waste containers must be compatible with the chemicals stored in them and be suitable for shipping.

1.  LDPE bottles are compatible for use with many laboratory chemicals.
2.  Avoid using glass containers for collection of waste.
3.  In many cases, an empty bottle that a chemical was shipped in can also be used for it's waste.
Be sure to completely remove the original label and attach a waste label.
4.  Placing a label over the top of another label is not permitted.
5.  For some materials, a metal can can be used for storage.
6.  Waste containers must be tightly capped except when material is being added.
7.  Waste containers must be kept clean.
Residue on the outside of a container is considered a discharge by EPA.
8.  Waste containers must be segregated by hazard class.
