Mercury Spills

Mercury is difficult to clean up, and it is important to completely remove all the tiny droplets.

1.  For larger spills, or any spill for which you believe unrecovered mercury might remain, contact the REM Hazardous Materials Management section for spill clean-up, instructions, or assistance (40121).  Spills over 1 pound must be reported to federal and local agencies.
2.  Do not use a vacuum cleaner to clean up mercury spills
3.  Use a trapped vacuum line with a tapered glass tube to pick up droplets
4.  Cover small droplets with one of the following:
  Sodium polysulfide solution.
  Silver metal compounds.
