High Hazard Emergencies

This class of emergency is immediately dangerous to life and health, involves a large area, major injury to personnel, is a threat to personnel and the public, involves radioactive material, involves an infectious agent, or involves a highly toxic, corrosive, or reactive hazardous material.

1.  For LARGE Spills of Hazardous materials or any spill you are not properly equipped to remedy, Isolate the area and then evacuate.
  Close doors if possible, and keep others out of the area.
  Activate the building fire alarm if possible.
  Call 911 (9-911 from inside PRIME Lab) and report the incident giving the exact location and as much detail about the incident as you can provide.   Do not hang up until they are satisfied with the information you provided.
  Affix "Building Evacuated" signs to both PRIME Lab entrance doors.
  If possible, collect the MSDS for the material involved.
2.  Rescue injured person only if equipped, and capable of doing so.
  Never attempt to rescue someone who is unconscious unless you know what the problem is and you know you are properly protected from the hazard.
  Do not move a seriously injured person unless he/she is in further danger.
  Anyone overcome with smoke or chemical gases or vapors should be removed to uncontaminated air and treated for shock.
  Provide first aid if you have suitable training.
3.  Chemical splash to the eyes.
  Remove contact lenses if present.
  Flush eyeballs and inner eyelids.
  Forcibly hold eyes open.
  Irrigate for at least 15 minutes.
  Emergency medical treatment is required for any hazardous material in the eye.   Call 911 (9-911 from inside PRIME Lab) and report the incident giving the exact location and as much detail about the incident as you can provide.   Do not hang up until they are satisfied with the information you provided.
4.  Chemical splash to the skin.
  For certain materials that react with water, it is best to brush off as much of the material as possible before applying water.
  Use Emergency Shower or other water source to flood the affected area with water.
  Remove any contaminated clothing, including undergarments and jewelry.
  Call 911 (9-911 from inside PRIME Lab) and report the incident giving the exact location and as much detail about the incident as you can provide.   Do not hang up until they are satisfied with the information you provided.
  Irrigate for at least 15 minutes.
