Detection of Weak T-Tauri Stars in the Southern Cross
Observations with X-ray telescopes aboard satellites have resulted in
many serendipitous discoveries of previously unknown X-ray sources. In
the course of the observation of a Beta Cephei variable Beta-Cru with
the ROSAT PSPC, several bright X-ray point sources were detected
within the field of view and I studied their temporal and spectral
properties along with the characteristics of the interstellar
neighborhood. The temporal variations of the X-ray intensity, spectral
description, the estimated X-ray to V band optical flux ratio, and the
detected ``shadowing'' in the M band (3/4 keV) diffuse X-ray background
by foreground molecular gas (as traced by the IRAS 100 data) led
me to conclude that these ROSAT discovered X-ray pointed sources
are Weak-lined T-Tauri stars (Park & Finley 1996). This identification
was recently confirmed by follow-up optical spectroscopic observations
by Feigelson & Lawson (1997).
