Four problems that are solved by encoding data are (1) ensuring DC balance, that is, the same number of 0's and 1's being transmitted on average, (2) ensuring a large number of logic level transitions to facilitate clock recovery, (3) error detection, and (4) data synchronization using special non-data 'code' characters.
