PHYSICS 460
QUANTUM MECHANICS I
PROBLEM SET
# 4
DUE 21 February 2003
Finish reading Chapter 2, in
particular 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, in G. Continue
reading
Chapter 3, especially 3.3 and 3.4 in G. After Chapter 2 we will study central potentials and the hydrogen atom. Hence begin reading Chapter 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3. We will then return to Chapter 3 in detail.
Do problems
1.) G: 2.26
2.) G: 2.27
3.) G: 2.39
4.) G: 2.47
Supplemental
Reading in Shankar (S):
Chapter 5 discusses the One Dimensional problems we already solved. Chapter 5.4 looks at scattering from a potential step using a Gaussian wave packet as an incoming particle wavefunction. It then follows its time evolution in order to determine the R and T coefficients. It is a difficult section. Then Chapter 7 is devoted to the all important Harmonic Oscillator. Finally, begin reading Chapter 1 in Shankar for the mathematics of QM. Previous students remarked how useful studying this chapter was for them. We will re-formulate QM along these lines after we study the hydrogen atom in Chapter 4 of G.
