Sample SDS Page - Nitric Acid
This is an excerpt from the SDS for Nitric Acid showing the hazards identification section. This section reveals that nitric acid is corrosive, an oxidizer, and a heath hazard. IMPORTANT -- Remember that the GHS scale is backwards from the NFPA scale. This means that where the SDS says it is an Oxidizing liquid Category 1, it is extremely dangerous. This information is also given graphically in the pictograms, which do not have explanations attached. You are expected to know what the pictograms mean. The pictograms have already been covered in the section on labeling.
There will be a signal word which will either be WARNING, or DANGER. Danger indicates a more serious hazard than warning. There will also be a hazard statement. The hazard statement is a series of short phrases that indicate specific hazards. For nitric acid, these start with "May cause fire of explosion" followed by a list of additional hazards.
It also gives a section of precautionary information which includes sections on prevention of exposure, response to accidents, storage and disposal information. The storage and disposal information is rarely of any use, so any questions should be directed to REM.
