Overhead Cranes:


Preoperation checks.
Checks made with the controls turned on.
Make sure crane is located away from people and obstacles.
Do not operate a damaged crane until it has been repaired.

1.  Lower the hook so it can be inspected.
Make sure the tip of the hook isn't twisted more than 10 degrees or that the throat isn't bent open by more that 15 percent.
Make sure the safety latch is present and functioning


2.  Check wire rope for damage.
Look for frayed wires, kinks, corrosion, or signs that it has stretched.


3.  Check that wire rope is on the hoist drum properly.


4.  Check the limit switch.
Make sure no one is near the hoist.
Raise the hoist with no load slowly to limit swith.
Make sure it stops when the limit switch is hit.
Do not allow the hook to hit the drum if the switch isn't working.
5.  Check the hoist brakes.
Lift a load a few inches off the floor and put the control in neural.
The load should stay suspended.
