Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

An important and very demanding requirement of the Lab Standard is the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirement.

1.  Standard operating procedures relevant to safety and health considerations to be followed when laboratory work involves the use of hazardous chemicals must be included in the chemical hygiene plan.
2.  The PRIME Lab SOPs are included in Tab 1 of the PRIME Lab CHP which is located online at:
http://www.physics.purdue.edu/primelab/safety/Safety Resources/SOPs/SOP-list.htm
3.  Project-specific and/or area-specific standard operating procedures must be written and attached at Tab 1 by departments, work units, principal investigators, or project directors for hazardous chemical and hazardous operations work not covered by the following special precautions sections. Notify the PRIME Lab DTI or your supervisor if there are SOPs that need to be added to the CHP.
4.  The standard also requires the employer to develop the circumstances under which a particular laboratory operation, procedures or activity shall require prior approval from the employer before implementation.   The Laboratory Supervisor will define which if any activities, operations, or procedures constitute circumstances under which prior approval must be obtained by employees before implementation.
