Saturday Morning Astrophysics at Purdue (SMAP): selected lessons and activities

SMAP engages grade 6-12 students with learning experiences that are not typically a part of classroom instruction. For example, students will learn about the formation and evolution of our solar system, how we know "what's out there," as well less familiar topics, like the birth and death of stars or the search for ubiquitous dark matter.

How Stuff Works

How Stuff works is a broad website covering not only science stuff, but computers, health, and more. When you link on to science, you will be provided with an array of options in all the fields of science. There's also a science library.

Operation Physics

Operation Physics is a curriculum of 13 physics units that was developed in 1988 for the purpose of educating teachers of grades 4-8 who are teaching physical science. Information provided in this web site were developed to teach teachers in northern Ohio since 1990. While many of the activities are relevant to teachers who participated in the workshops, some might be useful to other teachers.


This website contains over 415 lessons that link science and math to the arts. In addition, other links to articles and events are available.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a proposed ground-based 8.4-meter, 10 square-degree-field telescope that will provide digital imaging of faint astronomical objects across the entire sky, night after night. In a relentless campaign of 15 second exposures, LSST will cover the available sky every three nights, opening a movie-like window on objects that change or move on rapid timescales: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids, and distant Kuiper Belt Objects. The superb images from the LSST will also be used to trace billions of remote galaxies and measure the distortions in their shapes produced by lumps of Dark Matter, providing multiple tests of the mysterious Dark Energy.

Illuminations- NCTM Resources for Math Plenty of resources for grades 9-12. Lessons and simulations.
PhET (U of Colorado) On-line simulations for a broad variety of (mostly physical) science concepts.  Superb stuff for this discipline. Learners control variable in real time to conduct experiments and analyze results.   Simulations are very user friendly and engaging.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Emphasis on life sciences, DNA, diversity, evolution. Teacher lesson guides, iPhone apps, videos.
Understanding Evolution Your one-stop source for everything on evolution. Evolution 101 course for educators; classroom activities, lesson plans; browsable archive of articles, tutorials, interactive investigations;
Bozeman Science Weighted toward Bio, AP Bio, AP Chem, less Physics, a bit of Stats. Hundreds of informative video segments appropriate for students; also gems related to pedagogy and educational strategies.  Check out, for example, “The Blended Learning Cycle.”
Buck Academy Project based learning.  The grand mama of PBL learning sites. Under “Resources” go to Project Search.”  Search sources by subject area.  Lots of “projects,” fewer “problems,” but there are some really good lessons/activities/video resources.

Indiana Collaborative for Project Based Learning Lots of “Projects,” could use more “problem” orientation.  However, useful. Check out the ICPBL Library for resources.
