In the months before, during, and after the comet collision with Jupiter the High Energy Astrophysics undergraduates Andrew Becker, Dave Bainbridge, and Anthony Roach, took many images of Jupiter. This data collection had a twofold significance. First, it contributed to the worldwide observations of Jupiter and the collision. Secondly, it helped to iron out some problems with working at the Cumberland Observatory and to streamline some of the procedures that would be used in later observation. One major significance of these observations (aside from the fact that it was a major astronomical event!) was that it was the first set of scientific observations performed by these undergraduates for the HEAp group.
