THIS IS THE THIRD AND FINAL LIST OF LUCY SITES. From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:03:15 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 11:47:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 11 of 19 SCHOOLS BEVERLY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL, 241 S. Moreno Drive Desi Jr. graduated from here. IMMACULATE HEART SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Lucie Arnaz attended school here. There's no listing in the phone book for the Immaculate Heart School for Girls, but the Immaculate Heart High School is at 5515 Franklin Avenue. ST. JOHN'S MILITARY ACADEMY Desi Jr. attended school here. There's no listing for this school in the phone book. SHERWOOD OAKS EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE Lucy taught a six-week course in comedy here. There's no listing for this college in the phone book. STORES, ETC. ANTIQUE STORES If you like to surround yourself with items from the 1950's (largely because they look like things from the Ricardo's apartment), you'11 enjoy several stores in the 5200 block of Melrose Avenue. The stores have lots of items from the 50's. (I collect the dishes that the Ricardo's used -the Franciscan ivy pattern. Anyone else?) FARMER'S MARKET, W. 3rd and Fairfax Avenue It was here that Ethel bought the little cakes she was eating so loudly. Lucy Ricardo had Robert Taylor autograph her orange here. This is a delightful place to go. Be sure you go to the old part where the fresh produce is. Have an orange-- the produce is beautiful and delicious. Lucy reported that Amanda Milligan, the woman who dipped candy with her, was from the Farmer's Market. The day we were there, a man at a candy shop there was dipping candy in chocolate just like in the episode. (There's no conveyor belt, though.) FLATO'S This is the expensive jewelry shop on Sunset Blvd. where Lucille Ball told Louella Parsons that she looked at engagement rings with Gene Markey. There's no listing for this shop in the phone book. LOS ANGELES AIRPORT On a flight from Omaha, Desi helped the pilot navigate into the Los Angeles airport. The pilot had only navigated in the Midwest and did not know where Los Angeles was. Desi was in a hurry to get home because he had just been hired to lead the band on Bob Hope's show MAGIC SHOP ON THE BOULEVARD This is where Lucy and Ethel bought the masks of the movie stars that Lucy impersonated for Carolyn Appleby. There is a shop called Hollywood Magic Inc. at 6614 Hollywood Blvd., three blocks east of Highland. There are horror masks there but no masks of the old stars. SEE'S CHOCOLATES, 1-800-347-7337 One book reports that the woman who dipped chocolates with Lucy was from See's Chocolates. Kitchen--3423 S. La Cienega Blvd. North Hollywood--6529 Laurel Canyon Road Los Angeles stores--715 W. 7th and 11677 San Vicente Blvd. UNION STATION, Alameda Street at Santa Ana Freeway Lucy arrived here in Los Angeles on 7/19/33. STUDIOS I find the studios confusing due to the changes of names and ownership over the years, but I think the following is correct. Lucy worked at Columbia, then Paramount, then RKO, then Desilu. BURBANK STUDIOS Lucy and Gary Morton had offices here when "Life with Lucy" was filmed. On 3/16/57, this was the site of the 9th Annual Emmys, with three nominations for "I Love Lucy" but no awards. COLUMBIA RECORDS, 1801 Century Park West This is the company that produced Desi's records. DESILU PLAYHOUSE was at General Service Studio's Stage 2. 6633 Romaine Street (next to Selma Avenue) The audience waited outside the Romaine Street entrance. DESILU STUDIOS, 846 N. Cahuenga Blvd. This is where "I Love Lucy" was filmed the third season and thereafter. This was Motion Picture Center. The phone number was HOllywood 9-5981. At least part of the Desilu Studios is now called Ron-Mar Studios. We saw a taping of "Golden Palace" there. What fun to see a sitcom being filmed on the same site "I Love Lucy" was filmed! And so many aspects of today's sitcoms continue the procedures begun with "I Love Lucy." From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:10:07 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 11:49:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 13 of 19 GLEN GLENN STUDIOS, across from General Service Studio on Romaine Street This is where the music was recorded for the early "I Love Lucy" shows. For later shows, they recorded by cable from Motion Picture Center. HOLLYWOOD CENTER STUDIOS, 1040 N. Las Palmas Avenue (2 blocks east of Highland and north of Melrose) "I Love Lucy" was filmed here the first two seasons. MGM, 10000 Washington Blvd., Culver City In 1942, Lucy signed a contract with MGM. RKO (became Desilu) Lucy and Desi met at RKO when they filmed "Too Many Girls." Columbia Square (CBS) at Sunset & Gower is where the pilot for "I Love Lucy" was filmed. Lucy & Desi bought the RKO Gower and RKO Culver City lots. (Culver Studios, 9336 Washington Blvd.) In 1957, they paid $6,150,000.00 for RKO. Lucy's first visit to Culver City was to audition for "Gone with the Wind." It rained and she couldn't get the top of the convertible up, so she arrived soaked. Desi tried to report for work his first morning to Beth Olan, the cemetery next to RKO. UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, 100 University City Plaza (818) 777-3771 Tickets for the entire Universal tour are $27.00. The box office is open 8:30 - 4:00. Go down the series of escalators and then walk beyond the tram station to find the Lucy museum. It is possible to buy a full ticket, just visit the Lucy museum and then turn in your ticket for a refund for the rest of the price, but there's a time limit on it. I can't see how anyone could get up and down all those escalators and see the museum in that short a time. Sound Stage 27 is where "Here's Lucy" was filmed. This is next to the Lucy Museum. There's a gift store on this site with lots of Lucy goodies for sale. The gift store closes at 6:00 p.m. Lucy's trailer was parked where the museum is. The museum is wonderful! One of my favorite treasures there is the maroon-colored set of beads Lucy wore as Camille, the snaggle-toothed old queen of the gypsies. There's also the suit she wore as the Professor in the pilot and her dress from Mame. Also her backgammon table, etc., etc. From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:15:19 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 11:50:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 14 of 19 THEATRES BILTMORE THEATRE This is where Lucy appeared in "Dream Girl." This theatre isn't listed in the phone book. EL CAPITAN THEATRE, 6838 Hollywood Blvd. This is where Desi's band played for Bob Hope's shows. On one show, Al Jolson guest starred and Desi refused to play until the audience stopped applauding Al Jolson's entrance despite Bob Hope's order to go ahead and play. MANN'S CHINESE THEATRE, 6925 Hollywood Blvd. Lucy & Ethel stole John Wayne's footprints from here. Notice that the cement slab at the theatre also has horseshoe prints. PANTAGES THEATRE, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. (Hollywood & Vine) This art deco theatre is where the doorman called for "Lucille Ball's car, please," even though Desi was with her. This is the site of the Academy Awards in the 1950's. Lucy & Desi attended the 1954 Hollywood premiere here of "A Star is Born." VARIETY ARTS THEATRE, 940 S. Figueroa In January 1989, Lucy attended an AIDS benefit show with Jim Brochu here. Lucie Arnaz was one of the performers. WALK OF FAME STARS, etc. The Walk of Fame is located on Hollywood Blvd. between Sycamore Avenue and Gower Street and on Vine Street, between Sunset Blvd. and Yucca Street. So many of Lucy's co-stars over the years have stars on the Walk of Fame. Here are the main ones. I have the book with everyone listed if you want to know the location of anyone else. (An aside for any other Oz fans: Can you believe it that Billie Burke, the Good Witch of the North, has a star but Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of the West, doesn't?!) Lucy has two stars: One is on the southside of Hollywood Blvd. between Wilcox Avenue and Cahuenga Blvd. She's between Cantinflas and Ben Alexander. The other is on the south side of Hollywood Blvd. between El Centro Avenue and Gower Avenue. She's between Lee Remick and Montgomery Clift. From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:01:59 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 11:52:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 16 of 19 OTHER PLACES IN CALIFORNIA BALBOA This is where Lucy and Desi docked their boat, Desilu. CAMP STONEMAN Lucy cut a ribbon at a new Army serviceman's club here in early 1951. CORONA DEL MAR LA JOLLA Desi bought a 45 acre horse-breeding farm here after the divorce. Desi frequently went to the racetrack here. On Saturday 7/28/51, Desi, Marc Daniels, and Jess Oppenheimer went to see Vivian Vance play the role of Olive Lashbrook, the other woman, in John van Druten's play, "Voice of the Turtle," at the La Jolla Playhouse, 1121 Prospect Avenue. During the summer break in 1953, Vivian Vance appeared at the La Jolla Playhouse with Mel Ferrer in "Pal Joey." LAKE ARROWHEAD This is where the Lucy-Desi special with Red Skelton, "Lucy Goes to Alaska," was filmed. PALM SPRINGS This is where Lucy and Ethel meet Rock Hudson. Lucy and Desi had a vacation home here. RIVERSIDE SAN DIEGO At the Arlington Reception Center, Desi was once playing baseball and tore cartilage in his knee. Desi showed "I Love Lucy" to a theatre here to get an initial audience reaction. Lucy & Desi rehearsed at the Coronado Hotel with Pepito the Clown for their stage tour of the pilot. SAN FRANCISCO PALACE HOTEL (This is now the Sheraton Palace Hotel at Market and New Montgomery Streets.) Desi and his band played here with Bob Hope. Lucy flew here to break up one of Desi's affairs. Desi met Maurice Chevalier here. Jack Aldworth, assistant director on "I Love Lucy," bought two baby coffins at a funeral parlor and ordered two 60 pound tunas, freshly caught, uncleaned and unscaled and they had to look alike, at a cannery in San Francisco. Vivian Vance played "Voice of the Turtle" for six weeks in San Francisco in 1945. Vivian Vance & John Dodds had a home in San Francisco. John Dodds left his estate to antique dealer, Serge Matt. Visit Serge Matt's antique shop, Bauer Antiques, at 1878 Union Street. (921-7656) He has Vivian Vance's unpublished memoirs. (Excerpts were published in the National Enquirer in August and September 1989.) We went to his shop and met him. He explained that he has no plans to publish her memoirs, unfortunately. He also told me that he still has her piano. SANTA MONICA On the pier on a date with Hal King, a gypsy fortune teller told Lucy, "Young lady, one day you will be the richest woman and the biggest star in Hollywood." SOLANA BEACH Desi's funeral on 12/2/86 was at the St. James Roman Catholic Church. Desi's army base at Birmingham Hospital was located here. VICTORVILLE The woman who crushed grapes in the vat with Lucy was from here. Her name was Theresa and she spoke no English. From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:11:37 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 11:54:34 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 18 of 19 Mike, my partner in finding so many of these Lucy sites, is a Marilyn Monroe fan. We also visited a few sites associated with Marilyn. Mike insisted that I should share these as well. MARILYN MONROE SITES The apartment Marilyn shared with Shelly Winters, 8573 Holloway Drive, West Hollywood They shared this apartment together in 1951. Next door at 8565 is where Sal Mineo was stabbed to death on the carport. Marilyn's Home (where she died), 12305 Fifth Helena Drive Go west on San Vicente Blvd. to Carmelina Avenue. Then go north on Carmelina Avenue to Fifth Helena Drive. Her home is the one with no address at the end of the street. You can sort of look over the walled gate to see the house. Peter Lawford's Beach House, 625 Pallisades Beach Road You can't see much of the house from the highway, but if you go to the beautiful park with all the palm trees on Ocean Avenue between Alta Avenue and Montana Avenue and look down on the house, you have a great view. Buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary 1218 Glendon Avenue Take route 405 (the San Diego Freeway) to the Wilshire Blvd. exit. Go east to Glendon Avenue. The entrance is on your left tucked between an office building (on the southeast corner of Wilshire Blvd.) and a parking garage. Marilyn's grave is in the northeast corner of the cemetery almost to the end of the wall of vaults. The gardener was delighted to point out other celebrities' graves also--Donna Reed, Natalie Wood, and Sebastian Cabot. There are two florist shops about a block away. Look out, though, one shop tried to sell us roses that were dead. Darrell Vail & Mike Cusano 1615 Que Street, N.W., Apt. #1104 Washington, D.C. 20009 (202) 265-6290 From ILoveLucy-sender@bolis.sf-bay.org Tue Sep 12 16:02:28 1995 Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 12:01:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Ramsey Subject: ILL sites 19 of 19 Actually, there is no more listing of the entire ILL sites document. However, I just wanted to mention a few items here. There may be inordinate amounts of spacing, or the omission of letters, replaced by tildes ( ~ )... This is due to the scanner. However, you can highlight your text, paste it into a word processing utility, and clean it up. Also, some items mentioned are dated. For example, Gale Gordon is now deceased (near the end of the entire document). Any other corrects or omission, let the rest of the list know, so we can keep this as accurate as possible. Many thanks to Pam in Gimbels basement, for sending the document to me in the first place. I really appreciate all the incredible information I have received from this list. Yes, Lucy IS endemic to our culture, she is everywhere! If you are interested in the following www address, you can download the entire theme of the show... http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/kennyp/sounds.html Each morning, when my Power Macintosh starts up, it plays this theme. I am also planning to scan a photo of Lucy, in color, off the videotape sleeve, and place her face ALL OVER my screen! Enjoy the ILL sites list!
