Research Interests

My research program consists of two distinct but ultimately related components: science and instrumentation. The main thrust of my science work has been to understand physical processes in black hole systems (including both stellar-mass black holes and active galactic nuclei). Of particular interest are mass accretion, particle acceleration, radiation mechanisms, and observational signatures of strong gravity. More recently, however, I also become interested in the "missing baryon problem" that is likely related to the warm-hot phase of circumgalactic and intergalactic media. On the experimental side, I have been involved in hardware and software development for astronomical applications.
