There are three steps in a basic spin-dependent electronic device: generation of the spin polarization in the semiconductor, control of the spin transport, and connection to the outside (or measurement). Generation relies on the same principle as the polarization of electrons or neutrons scattered against a polarized target. The spin transport through a ferromagnet-semiconductor interface consists of mesoscopic and diffusion driven current. Experimental tests and device designs will be discussed.
