Photoemission has revealed that in the pseudogap phase of cuprates, the Fermi surface is truncated to form disconnected "arcs" in momentum space. Two schools of thoughts have arisen on this issue - the arc is a thermally broadened node, consistent with preformed pairs, or the arc is simply part of a hole pocket induced by density wave order. The pros and cons of these two scenarios will be discussed in light of recent photoemission and quantum oscillation experiments.
