Through proper arrangement of laser fields, synthetic gauge field can be realized in an ultracold gas of neutral atoms. In the case of a non-Abelian gauge field, spin-orbit coupling can be generated. Such a system provides a new platform to create novel quantum states including nontrivial topological states. I will review the latest progress in this topic and discuss our own theoretical study in spin-orbit coupled bosonic and fermionic gases.
