PARTICLE PHYSICS FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS

The purpose of this website is to provide high school physics teachers with an organized method of integrating particle physics throughout their entire program. It is designed for most non-calculus based programs, but can be used in any program. All items are designed to be used in a progression that builds on, but does not require use of all previously suggested activities. The goal is to allow physics teachers to quickly involve particle physics in their program with minimal preparation time One of the main driving forces of this site is the involvement of QUARKNET, a program funded through NSF and DOE that is dedicated to the same fundamental concept as this website, which is the inclusion of Particle Physics in high schools. State Standards vary, but most require inclusion of at least part of the material presented at this site.

OBJECTIVES FOR THIS WEBSITE

Physics students will be introduced to Modern Physics early in the curriculum

Having teachers become aware of the fantastic resources available that can be used to excite students about Physics

Your students will be exposed to areas where Physicists are using Physics

Students will see the connection between Classical Physics and how it is being applied in Particle Physics

Interactive programs will help students learn the fundamental particles that make up the Standard Model and the characteristics of these and the products they combininations form

Critical skills of science will be taught to students, such as learning to use observational method to visualize how detectors work

Students will be exposed to the inquiry method of problem solving and group collaboration
