Aluminum-26 as a tracer of aluminum

Richard Flack, Purdue University

Aluminum is the third most abundant element on the Earth and yet has no known biological function. Aluminum is added to many foods, aluminum compounds are used as the active or inactive ingredient in several drugs, drinking water is often treated with aluminum, and plants grown in acidic soil accumulate aluminum. Apart from foods and drugs, some workers are exposed to aluminum in the workplace. Everyone is exposed to aluminum in one form or another.
