Modern Mechanics
To do AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
- Obtain the textbook (at campus bookstores; used books are OK).
- Obtain the new PHYS 172 Laboratory Manual (from bookstore).
- Obtain an iClicker audience response remote (not a CPS pad).
- Register for WebAssign, the on-line homework service.
- Register your iClicker on CHIP, your on-line PHYS 172 gradebook.

During the first week you will:
Attend the two scheduled lectures, on Tuesday and Thursday.
Attend the Recitation session assigned to you by the Registrar.
Log in to WebAssign and complete "HW #1" by midnight Thursday, Jan 10.
Log in to WebAssign and complete "Lab #1 Orientation" by Tuesday, Jan 15. Lab meetings will not be held during the first week.
Attendance is required for three evening exams this semester:

The date of the Final Exam will be announced later in the semester. Exam week ends on the evening of Saturday, May 3, and attendance is required.

Prerequisites: Corequisite: MA 161. Authorized equivalent courses or consent of instructor may be used in satisfying course pre- and co-requisites.
Description: Introductory calculus-based physics course using fundamental interactions between atoms to describe Newtonian mechanics, conservation laws, energy quantization, entropy, the kinetic theory of gases, and related topics in mechanics and thermodynamics. Emphasis is on using only a few fundamental principles to describe physical phenomena extending from nuclei to galaxies. 3-D graphical simulations and numerical problem solving by computer are employed by the student from the very beginning.
