CERN is planning to extend LHC operations beyond 2015 through an accelerator upgrade to increase the luminosity by one order of magnitude called Super LHC or SLHC. The upgrade will be performed in two phases. Significant changes to CMS are required to achieve the same detector performance at the SLHC as at the LHC despite the large increase in event rate.
CMS is organizing a large R&D effort to achieve these goals and US-CMS is participating in these challenging tasks. An effort on innovative detector technology must occur in the US to maintain a leadership role in the CMS experiment over the next decade.
