Department of Physics
Next year we are planning to optimize the availability of the cosmic-ray detectors by rotating them between the schools connected to the Purdue QuarkNet program. The teachers have planned to share their experiences with other science teachers in the state by presenting their studies at the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers conference in early February. We have selected to hold our 2009 QuarkNet week from June 22-26, 2009. We plan to introduce the Masterclass program, visit FermiLab, review use of the cosmic ray-detectors and refresh any skills that may be needed. We foresee more lectures from faculty to refresh our background knowledge and to understand the physics probed by the LHC. We look forward to see some events from colliding beams at the LHC and we hope to include more high school students in the next summer program.
The Purdue QuarkNet program will run from June 22 to 26, 2009 in the
Physics Department at Purdue.

QuarkNet is a national program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to involve high school physics and chemistry teachers in cutting-edge high energy particle physics research. Teachers work together to develop curriculum which can be incorporated into their teaching; thus, exposing students to the physics and technology of particle physics.

Our goals for teachers include a deeper understanding of physics content, an appreciation for the machinery of modern science, an introduction to inquiry-based teaching as well as evolution in individual teaching to a more student-centered mode of instruction.
Purdue's QuarkNet Center, started in 2003, operates in conjunction with the Physics Outreach Office.
