The Purdue Physics Department is pleased to announce the offering of distance education courses for Indiana High School Physics Teachers. We are offering two courses, Phys 590A, Principles of Physics I (Mechanics), and Phys 590B, Principles of Physics II (Electricity, Magnetism, and Optics). During the Spring 2002 semester both 590A and 590B are being offered. Both courses will carry 3 units of graduate credit through the division of continuing education at Purdue. This would ostensibly be most useful to teachers needing graduate credit toward professional development requirements or possibly for satisfying the qualifications for waivers to teach physics in high school. Physics 590A and 590B cover the basic principles of physics, exposing you to the material through videotapes, your textbook, and problem solving. This makes it possible for you to move through the materials at a convenient pace, at a convenient location, and to access a variety of modes of learning. The text we are using for the course is Physics for Scientists & Engineers by Serway, 5th edition, Saunders College Publishing. The content and structure of the courses will focus largely on the basics of physics, so individuals with limited backgrounds in physics are welcome. For more information about the courses, please contact disted@physics.purdue.edu. For questions relating to costs and continuing education credits, contact the Office of Continuing Education at Purdue at 1-800-359-2968, ext. 96, or by E-mail to Continuing Education, and provide an address so an information packet may be mailed to you.
