The window we are using today is a thin aluminum window
and its area is much smaller than the one shown here.
Also shown is a mesh type drift cathode at which negative
potential is held. This drift cathode creates a linear electric
field in the gas region to help primary electrons drift toward
avalanche regions. Its intensity is not large enough to cause
avalanche. We are using a flat aluminum metalic foil today but
the difference between the two types of window is minimal.
