The detection of gravitational waves promises to open up a new astrophysical window on the universe. In this talk, I’ll discuss gravitational waves, what makes them so interesting and challenging to detect, and how we'll detect them using really big interferometers. I'll discuss the science and technology that are needed to make the interferometers work as well as highlight recent results of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration in the search for gravitational waves.
