Title: "The Rare Isotope Accelerator Project"

Abstract:
In the 1996 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) to the DOE and NSF emphasized that "the scientific opportunities made available by world-class radioactive beams are extremely compelling and merit very high priority". NSAC recommended that work be started on the design of a new facility to be constructed upon completion of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. This presentation will discuss the design of a new facility to be constructed upon completion of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. This presentation will discuss the scientific merit of the Rare Ion Accelerator (RIA) as well as the concepts that have recently been adopted for the production and subsequent acceleration of exotic, short-lived beams.
