Dr. David Wineland
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Professor Wineland is a member of the National Academy. His demonstration of laser cooling led to a resurgence of interest in light forces on atoms and spawned a major new activity in atomic-optical physics. He pioneered laser cooling of trapped ions and applied the techniques to fundamental tests and the creation of strongly coupled plasmas. He was a member of the National Academy of Science Committee on Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences. He is involved in developing a new type of atomic clock and in developing improved optical frequency standards.
