Title: DEEP: A Time Machine to Explore the Teenage Universe

The Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) is a major new redshift survey of 50,000 galaxies reaching back 6-9 billion years into the past when the Universe was half its current age. Using roughly 100 nights of the Keck 10-meter Telescope along with a new instrument designed by the DEEP team (DEIMOS), DEEP will tackle some of the grandest questions of cosmology and physics:

  1. what is the nature of dark energy;
  2. what is the nature of dark matter, and
  3. when and how have galaxies formed and evolved? DEEP is now 40% complete. Early results will be highlighted.
