a) Because EMBL is funded by 16 European countries plus Israel, the signees of the EMBL treaty, preference may be given to nationals of the EMBL-member states. EMBL offers a recognized PhD programme, Interns are not common in Hamburg, however, as a collaboration with one of the inhouse scientists, a short term stay as is typical for US interns is possible. Working language is English, fund sources have to be identified individually. On the other hand, projects you inhouse research currently ranges from protein overexpression, purification, crystallisation and related molecular biological work, to structure solving and refinement on the basis of x-ray diffraction data collected at one of the four, should have been already five, beamlines dedicated to protein crystallography. Structural and functional genomics work is in progress. The protein crystallography is augmented by EXAFS-and scattering experiments on biological systems, both performed on optimized beamlines. In particular the small angle scattering on protein solutions is supported by strong theoretical efforts. Further, research on beamline instrumentation and detector development is conducted. Info about current inhouse research at EMBL can be obtained by the outstation web page, details about projects conducted are published annually in the HASYLAB Annual Research Report Vol. 2 (http://www-hasylab.desy.de , click on Science).
Contact: Dr. Matthias Wilmanns, head of the Outstation, or when interested in a particular project, the respective project leader.
Opportunities for postdocs and specialists can be found on the embl web pages and new openings are usually posted in Science and Nature.

Intern opportunities for undergraduates are nearly no-existent. Most law firms and some companies will hire students beginning during the summer following the first year of law school. This "clerkship" is the traditional first exposure to the actual practice of law. Most law schools provide guidance on finding clerkship opportunities.

Matt Lyons, mattlyon@microsoft.com
Microsoft is always hiring interns for software development, testing, and program management positions. These internships will require some background in computer science, but these positions are not limited to computer science majors. (They offered me an internship.) If a student is interested in internships at Microsoft, they have a few options on how to pursue this: 1. Go to "http://www.microsoft.com/college. 2. Go to the Microsoft booth at the Industrial Round Table. 3. Send me mail at mattlyon@microsoft.com, and I can help answer questions or give advice.

Some summer internships available to college students. Contact major oil companies' employment/human resources centers.
Griffith L. Gordon, k4vx@nemonet.com
The CIA had an excellent intern program. In 1973 I hired a young co-op student from Boston College as I recall. He left the Agency around 1981 to pursue opportunities in the private sector. He is now the CEO of Lockheed Aerospace. His name is Al Smith. He learned both the hands-on side as well as the managerial side form his stint with the agency. Try http://www.cia.gov
Earl Ebert, eetheta@aol.com
The company I presently work for does not have the vision to use interns, sorry.
Kara Hoffman, kara@hep.uchicago.edu
