Department of PhysicsCHIP is the Purdue Physics Department’s on-line service that serves several important roles in many physics courses: 1) You work on the on-line homework on CHIP (except for PHYS 172/172H and PHYS 272/272H), 2) You will use CHIP to register your iClicker remote unit if your course uses iClicker. 3) CHIP is the official grade book for many physics courses. So you should check it regularly.
You can access CHIP from the course home page. Gradebook on CHIP is where you will be registering your iClicker if your course uses iClicker. In this casee, you will not be able to proceed any further with the Gradebook functions of CHIP until you have completed the iClicker registration.
CHIP log-in user id is the same as your Purdue career account user id. However, your password is maintained independently in CHIP. The first time you log in to CHIP, you need to enter a predetermined, initial default password. (Once successful, you should change it to something of your own choice. This includes the same password as your career account if you so wish, but please keep in mind that your CHIP password is not automatically synchronized with your career account.) Your initial default password this semester is constructed from the course number and your 10-digit Purdue ID Number (SID) as "xyzpassmn", where "xyz" is the first 3 digits of the course number (e.g., "218" if the course is 21800, "172" if it is a regular section of 17200, "172H" if it is an Honors section of 17200, etc.), followed by the word "pass" and the numbers "m" and "n" which are to be replaced by the sixth and seventh digits of your SID, respectively. For example, a student in 21800 with SID of 00153-25432 will have an initial password of "218pass25", one in a regular section of 17200 with SID of 00145-55367 will have an initial password of "172pass55". On the other hand, a student in an Honors section of 17200 with SID of 00234-76234 will have "172Hpass76".
Once you gain access to your CHIP account, the first thing you should do is to change your assigned initial password. Then register your iClicker if your course uses it. Both of these things are done through the CHIP Gradebook. Please click on the Gradebook link on the CHIP home page to go there.
