Overview of this course & lesson plans.
This course is designed for students with an interest in helping develop curriculum related to the national science standard: The Physical World—The Universe. The project is being developed in response to a grant received by Professor Laura Cayon, continuing lecturer for Intermediate Astronomy and Cosmology. The goal is to include science and science education majors interested in applying the Understanding by Design and 5E Learning Models to develop curriculum that can be used in high school classrooms. Students would enroll in Physics 290M, taking the course for 1 credit. Class will meet weekly for 3 purposes: for students to learn appropriate content (see below) and to use the two curriculum models, for students to be given specific assignments related to developing the curriculum using the models, and for students to share their work with the group so as to reach consensus on what is included. Classes will meet weekly for 1 hour. The remainder of the time, students will work independently on assignments.
Professor Cayon and outreach coordinator, Dr. Keith Adams, are most interested in having students enrolled in Physics 290M who do not have previous knowledge in the content, but who are interested in the content and/or curriculum development (future educators). Regular attendance and meeting due dates for independent assignments is required.
