About the course
The course brings together science and education majors to work on developing teaching units for K-12 grades on the subject of the universe. The course is taught by Laura Cayon (Continuing lecturer, Department of Physics) and Julie Conlon (Outreach coordinator, Department of Physics). Laura's expertise on Cosmology is joined by Julie's educational experience to guide the students in this effort. It is aimed at different grades based on the interest of the education majors taking the course at a given semester. Students are introduced to the Indiana standards and to different teaching models used to prepare a teaching unit. Contents and some of the available resources are overviewed. Students take the developed teaching units to classrooms and they are encouraged to participate in some workshops addressed to teachers as the one yearly organized by HASTI (Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc.).
