Slow Samba

Symptoms

Clients may experience some sluggishness during read/write sessions to a network share.

Cause

In order to better facilitate our users of Windows Vista and Windows 7, we have upgraded Samba.

Microsoft has implemented new protocols for Windows Vista and Windows 7 for network communication. These protocols differ from the legacy protocols that were used in Windows XP and prior.

lpr Print error under UNIX hosts

This page applies to anyone receiving an lpr error under UNIX hosts similar to one listed below:

lpr: unable to print file: client-error-bad-request

Problem

The problem is that gutenberg was recently updated which houses all printers for the department. This provides newer software versions which provide newer features and functionality, however this also seems to have caused an error with older hosts.

ROOT (CERN package)

ROOT is a software package provided from CERN. ROOT is available for use on any PCN-maintained workstation. Use the following directions to access this particular package.

cd /package/root
#Look at the various versions available and determine which you would like to use

#Source the setup file appropriate to the version you want and shell you use
#setup.sh for bash
source 5.22_00/setup.sh

#setup.csh for csh variants
source 5.22_00/setup.csh

My fonts aren't working in Mathematica. How can I fix this?

Copy the files under /usr/local/mathematica/SystemFiles/Fonts to somewhere, like the home directory on your X client you're logging into amdahl from. Adding these fonts will only work if you are logged in from a UNIX workstation.
