Setting up IMAP
Note from Dave
These instructions are for our old Physics mail service and are deprecated, however they will work for ITaP exchange email if you substitute “owa.purdue.edu” for “franklin.physics.purdue.edu”. These instructions will be re-fitted with new screenshots shortly after ITaP's set of upcoming Exchange upgrades.
Before You Start...
Your IMAP folders should be set up for you by default. This How-To page is here in case you wish to change the default settings.
It is important to have a general understanding of how to start the PINE email program before starting. At the UNIX command prompt type ” pine ” without the quotation marks. This will get you started at the main menu. For more instruction on simple functions and how to use PINE please refer to this PCN document.
PINE's Collection List screen
On PINE's Main Menu:
1. Type S for Setup 2. Type L for collectionLists
To setup a new Collection List that points to a mail folder saved on the remote IMAP mail server simply type A to Add a new Collection list. This will give you a screen that looks similiar to Figure 1.
Figure 1 - PINE Collection Lists Menu
Fill out the field Nickname with any name you want to give the link to the remote folders. For this example we are using Remote Folders. The Server field needs to be the following:
franklin.physics.purdue.edu/user=USERNAME/ssl/novalidate-cert
Replace USERNAME with your login name that you use to log into servers such as bohr or curie. Leave the two fields Path and View blank. They are more advanced features of PINE used for more versitility.
Saving the changes you made...
At the bottom of the screen there are several options.
1. Press CTRL-E to Exit Setup and save your work 2. Type Y to confirm you want to save the changes 3. Type Q to quit PINE
At this point restart PINE. If everything was successfully entered, PINE should be able to access your inbox on the remote IMAP server.
