Configuring PINE for IMAP access

Before You Start…

It is important to have a general understanding of how to start the PINE email program before starting. At the UNIX command prompt type “pine” without the quotation marks. This will get you started at the main menu. For more instruction on simple functions and how to use PINE please refer to this PCN document.

These instructions are for our old Physics mail service and are deprecated, however they will work for ITaP exchange email if you substitute “owa.purdue.edu” for “franklin.physics.purdue.edu”. These instructions will be re-fitted with new screenshots shortly after ITaP's set of upcoming Exchange upgrades.

On PINE's Main Menu:

 1. Type S for Setup
 2. Type C for Config

To edit a field simply navigate using the arrow keys on your keyboard down to the field you want to edit and then hit the enter key. This will allow you to edit any field in PINE. To set a field to say NO Value Set simply edit the field and delete everything listed. To save a field after editing, again hit the enter key.

The first entry highlighted above in Figure 1, personal-name, should default to your name. If it does not please notify PCN support at www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/support

The second entry, user-domain, highlighted below in Figure 2, should be purdue.edu

Entry number three, smtp-server should be set to: smtp.purdue.edu/ssl/user=USERNAME/novalidate-cert. For “USERNAME,” use your Purdue career account.

The fourth entry shown is nntp-server, should be news.purdue.edu. Information on how to use the PINE news reader is out of the scope of this document.

Entry number five, inbox-path should be {exchange.purdue.edu/ssl/user=USERNAME/novalidate-cert}Inbox/.

The fifth entry showin

The fifth entry shown highlighted in Figure 4, inbox-path, is the important one. This field tells PINE to look at the IMAP email server for new messages instead of the local server where it is currently running.

Substitute USERNAME for your login name that you currently use to log onto machines such as bohr.

At the bottom of the screen there are several options.

 1. Type E to Exit Setup
 2. Type Y to confirm you want to save the changes
 3. Type Q to quit PINE

At this point restart PINE. If everything was successfully entered, PINE should be able to access your inbox on the remote IMAP server.
