Printer Setup for Mac
Follow the directions below for your version of Mac OSX and you will have access to the Physics Department printers. You can find out which version of OSX you are using by clicking the Apple in the top left, then clicking on “About this Mac.”
Note that these directions will purge any currently-installed printers you have on your Mac. They will need to be re-installed after you have completed the steps below.
To install for Tiger (10.4.x):
- Save the following file - the default location is on your Desktop. cups-mac.tar
- Open a terminal window. (in /Applications/Utilities)
- sudo bash (use YOUR password when it prompts you)
- cd /etc/cups
- killall cupsd
- tar xvf ~/Desktop/cups-mac.tar
- /usr/sbin/cupsd
- sh ./makeraw.sh
To install for Leopard (10.5.x):

- cd /private/etc/cups
- rm -f /private/var/spool/cups/cache/org.cups.cupsd
- killall -9 cupsd
- tar xvf ~/Downloads/cups-mac.tar
- touch /private/var/spool/cups/cache/org.cups.cupsd
- wait (up to a minute or so) for launchd to start cupsd
- sh ./makeraw.sh
To install for Snow Leopard (10.6.x), Lion (10.7.x) and Mountain Lion (10.8.x):
- Save the following file - the default location is in your Downloads folder. cups-snowleopard.tar
- Open a terminal window. (in /Applications/Utilities)
- sudo bash (use YOUR password when it prompts you)
- cd /private/etc/cups
- rm -f /private/var/spool/cups/cache/org.cups.cupsd
- killall -9 cupsd
- tar xvf ~/Downloads/cups-snowleopard.tar
- touch /private/var/spool/cups/cache/org.cups.cupsd
- wait (up to a minute or so) for launchd to start cupsd
- sh ./makeraw.sh
And your mac should be all set! Lpr, lpq, and printing from the mac GUI should work like a charm.
