            <description>Creating a web directory

First, you will need to have an account on bohr. In your home directory, create a directory called “.www” (dot www). This directory name is not arbitrary. It must be exactly as shown.

Creating a file named &quot;index.html&quot;

In the .www directory, create a file named index.html. This is your 'front page'. Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator, your website address) will point to this file as a default html file when your URL is accessed. Usually, your URL will be in the form: …

            <link>http://www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/doc/wiki/wiki:software:macintosh_systems:idl_and_lion</link>
            <description>IDL 8.1 is known to have some problems when installed on Lion (and possibly some installs of Snow Leopard). This is a known issue that has to do with some of the libraries distributed with IDL (specifically libcurl).

Symptoms

On a fresh, new install of IDL 8.1 on any version of Lion, starting the binary causes crashes, almost immediately on start. It is totally unrelated to any licensing problem and will crash even if a dialog box is present on the screen.

You can get help several ways:

	* Check the Wiki either by navigating it or using the search box on the top right
		*  See Item 1
		*  Send an email describing your trouble to &lt;pcnstaff@purdue.edu&gt;
		*  Fill out an online trouble request at &lt;https://www.physics.purdue.edu/bugzilla&gt;
		* Or drop in to the front room of 394, and a PCN consultant can help you with your problem in person.

This is correct, as PCN servers do not have ftp services installed.

FTP Is no longer a service offered by PCN as it violates University Policy. PCN and University Policy now requires that file transfer should be done using methods that include encryption.

Due to some bugs in Pine we suggest that you do not set up saved messages, however of you really want your sent mail saved, (and you don't mind the potential of pine freezing) do the following:

            <description>What's a disk quota?

Users of PCN Unix systems do have quotas for their home directories. The disk quota is a limit to how much you can store in your home directory. This ensures that we have sufficient storage for everyone in the building.

	* Physics Faculty have a 2 GB quota
	*  Physics Staff/Students have a 600 MB quota

            <description>This document will provide directions on how to print eps files through lpr.

Background

Eps (Encapsulated PostScript) is a file standard which many applications use (typically for graphs). On our older backend server hardware, .eps files used to just print without any thought. However, due to recent server upgrades, these files no longer print. Printers which have cover-pages enabled print the cover page, but no actual data. The reason for this is that the newer server software properly ha…

            <description>Slow Samba

Symptoms

Clients may experience some sluggishness during read/write sessions to a network share.

Cause

In order to better facilitate our users of Windows Vista and Windows 7, we have upgraded Samba.

Microsoft has implemented new protocols for Windows Vista and Windows 7 for network communication. These protocols differ from the legacy protocols that were used in Windows XP and prior.

            <description>Your account is most likely over its disk quota, and your X-window session cannot write any files into your home directory.

To fix:

	* Log into the system via the console (press CTRL-ALT-F2)
		*  ssh to bohr.
		* Type the command 'quota -v'.
		* Find the files that are using all your space with the 'du' command. (type 'man du' for information on usage)
		* Remove, move away, or compress files such that you are below your quota.
		* You can switch back to the X-Window login by pressing CTR…

            <description>In any UNIX environment, there are certain commands a user needs to know to be able to easily manipulate files, and manage their account.

The most important command in UNIX is the man command. This is the command that gives you access to the system documentation. It provides you with the proper syntax for any command. For more information about man, tpye “man man” at the UNIX prompt.

            <link>http://www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/doc/wiki/wiki:software:email:pine:use</link>
            <description>PINE is a very nice mail program that “naive users could use without fear of making mistakes”, according to the developers at the University of Washington in Seattle. Originally developed in 1989, Pine has gone through many iterations and improvements over the years. The latest release includes many nice features that make Pine one of the most popular mailer programs in the Unix environment.

            <link>http://www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/doc/wiki/wiki:software:macintosh_systems:printing</link>
            <description>This is a known incompatibility between Adobe Photoshop and Hewlett-Packard printers. Essentially, images cannot be directly printed from Photoshop. To work around the problem:

	* Scan or create your image in Photoshop.
		* Save the image as a jpeg, gif, or other image format.
		* Open the image with Picture Viewer. (Found under the Applications folder, or in Apple Menu -&gt; Applications)
		* Print the image with Picture Viewer.

            <link>http://www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/doc/wiki/wiki:software:unix_systems:cups</link>
            <description>For the most part, you use CUPS lpr commands exactly like you used to with LPRNG:

lpr -Pprintername

And that's it!

However, specifying printer options with CUPS is done differently. With LPRNG, printing to transparency or disabling duplexing was done by appending ”--slide”, ”--duplex”, or ”--simplex” to the printer name.

            <link>http://www.physics.purdue.edu/PCN/doc/wiki/wiki:software:unix_systems:edit</link>
            <description>The ^M is due to Windows and Unix using a different characters for newlines.
Windows' newline character shows up as ^M in UNIX text editors.

You can use the dos2unix command to remove the ^M characters. Simply run

dos2unix filename &gt; newfilename

and what you specified as “newfilename” will contain your file, without the ^M characters.

            <description>A common culprit for quota-exceeding is the Mozilla browser. By default, it will store cache files in your home directory's .mozilla directory. A helpful solution to this problem is to use your desktop's /tmp directory for cache storage:

Place the following commands in your shell startup files:

To send an output to a PCN supported printer, use the command:

lpr -[option] filename

from a Unix shell command prompt.

Note: you may also specify the path of the printed file as well.

To send the output to a specific printer, use -P [printername] in the option field. For example, to print a file named foobaa.ps to babbage printer (default), the following command is used:

This does not mean that your project area 'YYY' is gone or moved.

This happens when an automounted filesystem (anything under /class, /project, or /home) is not mounted. To access any of the /class, /project, or /home areas, you need to refer to them as a subdirectory of /class, /project or /home. (/project/YYY, no…

If the file is large and/or /tmp too small, you will get this error.

Try and use “wget” to download your file:

It is not a mode-less editor (as common on modern PCs). Everything that you type does not necessarily appear on the screen. Vi has two modes, editing and command mode. Editing is used for data entry, while command is used to navigate and manipulate the data entered during the editing mode.
