ITaP Exchange 2007 Migration
This document provides basic information on the ITaP Exchange 2007 Migration and how it affects Physics users.
What is it?
- Exchange 2007 is an upgraded server system that Exchange users are being moved to over the coming weeks. If you previously used http://exchange.purdue.edu to check your webmail, then this change affects you. If, however, you used http://webmail.purdue.edu or Physics SquirrelMail, then you are not part of this change.
Why do I care?
- The upgraded server comes with a few changes that benefit you. These are:
- Quota is changing from 500MB to 1GB
- Now using Exchange 2007 OWA which should provide a better webmail for non-IE users
- Exchange 2007 can be used with the Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6 released at the end of August, 2009.
How will I know I'm going to be migrated?
- ITaP is sending out an email to users who will be migrated during the upcoming week each Friday. As there are many users and the migration is done between 7pm and 1am, they cannot give a specific date on when an account will be migrated.
- Here is a copy of the email:

Subject: Exchange 2007 Mailbox Migration
During the week of September 14-18, we will be migrating your mailbox to our new Exchange 2007 environment. The mailbox moves will take place in the evenings between 7:00pm and 1:00am. Due to the number of mailbox migrations we'll be performing in the upcoming weeks, we won't be able to individually schedule mailbox migrations. The following items should be kept in mind to help you prepare for the mailbox move:
The amount of time it takes to complete the move depends on how many total items you have in your mailbox. Deleting old items and emptying your Deleted Items and Junk E-mail folders will help speed up the process.
It's best to be completely logged out of any email clients during the mailbox move. Some email clients, like Entourage, tend to end up with missing email or duplicate calendar items if left open while a mailbox is moving. Being logged out will minimize issues like these from happening.
The new URL for Outlook Web Access (OWA) is https://owa.purdue.edu
Non-Outlook email clients (Entourage, Thunderbird, etc) will need to have the server address changed to “owa.purdue.edu”. Outlook clients won't have to make any changes, as it will automatically point to the new mailbox location. Outlook clients will still use “exchange.purdue.edu” when creating new email profiles.
To use Outlook from off campus, follow the instructions in this knowledgebase article: Link
Other Exchange 2007 articles can be found by going to https://www.purdue.edu/goldanswers/ss/ and searching “Exchange 2007”
BlackBerry devices that are activated on ITaP's BlackBerry Enterprise Server will automatically pick up the new mailbox location. All other devices (iPhones, Windows Mobile Devices, etc) will need to use the new server address of “owa.purdue.edu”.
If there are any issues after your mailbox has been moved, please contact the Customer Service Center at 49-44000 or atitap@purdue.edu.

How will I know I'm migrated?
- If you use Microsoft Outlook on your desktop here in Physics you won't notice anything and will be able to keep working like normal.
- However, if you use the Exchange website or any other mail client (iPhone, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc), you will not be able to login any longer.
- If you can't, then try the new URL: http://owa.purdue.edu
- If that link works and you see the new interface then you've been migrated
- Note that even if you haven't been migrated, you still can login to that page
I've been migrated - now what?
If your account has been migrated, then your mail client will need to be updated to reflect the server name change.
- If you know how to change this, you only need to change the incoming mail server from “exchange.purdue.edu” to “owa.purdue.edu” to continue receiving email.
- If not, you can follow the below links to get to the appropriate screens. The links below are directions for Physics Mail, however the directions should be good starting points.
- If you still have issues, contact PCN and we can help get you going again.
